A guard attached to Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, shot dead a farmer in Eripa, Boluwaduro Local Government Area, Osun State.
The incident happened last weekend in the Odo-Ada district of the city allocated by the city to the deceased and his Tiv tribesmen for agricultural activities.
The Tiv man was said to have been with his parents after the day’s work when the guard said to be from a nearby town, Iree, killed him with a Danish gun.
It was established that the alleged killer invaded the farm that day to steal yams from the deceased farm, believing the owner to have left the farm for the day.
When he discovered the man was still at the farm with his close associates, the suspect allegedly hid somewhere so they could leave.
Unfortunately, a few minutes after their departure, the deceased would have forgotten an object that he wanted to bring back from the farm and would have left. When he arrived there, he would have discovered that someone was harvesting his agricultural products.
The farmer who was with one of his brothers reportedly arrested the suspect who shot him and fled.

He was later apprehended by locals who handed him over to the Otan-Ayegbaju Police Divisional Office in the local government area.
Speaking about the incident, a relative of the deceased who identified himself as Donard TERKIMBI told our reporter that it was the boy in the company of his deceased who ran home to report the case.
Residents rushed to the farm and then had the suspect arrested. He was then handed over to the police.
The deceased relative, however, demanded justice on the matter and shouted at the authorities concerned not to sweep the matter under the rug.
In the meantime, the remains of the deceased have reportedly been placed in a nearby hospital.
When contacted, State Police Command spokeswoman Ms Yemisi Opalola confirmed the story and assured that she would ensure justice was done in the case.
The police spokesman said: ‘The farm owner named Sunday who is a native of Tiv was killed by a native of Iree also carrying on Sunday.
“Sunday of Iree had repeatedly been reported to the Eleripa of Eripa that he always enters farms to steal crops.
“Sunday (a native of Tiv) and his younger brother were at the farm when Sunday (Iree) entered the farm, he was accused of wanting to steal the crop, this infuriated the latter, then there was an altercation which led him to shoot his accuser.
“He also tried to kill the victim’s brother, but he escaped. He later carried the person he shot on his motorbike on his way to the village when other farmers met him on the way and assaulted him.
“The remains of the dead have been taken to hospital but the suspect is currently in police custody. He claimed he was the owner of the land where the Tiv guy was farming and he warned him not to to go back there.
Opalola, however, dismissed the allegation that police were asking family members of the deceased to make funds available to police to begin investigating the case.
