Hiddenfjord has been recognized by SEAL (which stands for Sustainability, Environmental Achievement, and Leadership) in the category Environmental initiatives for the spectacular reduction of CO linked to transport by the company2 emissions, which fell 94% when they switched from air freight to ocean freight last year.
“Our core value is sustainability, and our core belief is that our business today should not hamper future business,” said Atli Gregersen, owner and CEO of Hiddenfjord. “We humbly accept this award, recognizing that we all need to take more responsibility when it comes to making change today. As the current stewards of the planet, we owe it to future generations not only to talk about sustainability, but to take direct action to create it. “
Hiddenfjord stopped using air freight in October 2020, making it the first salmon farmer in the world to rely solely on more sustainable transport. In one movie released to celebrate the anniversary from this step the company explained how to use ocean freight liners delivering fresh salmon to customers has significantly reduced their carbon footprint.
Additionally, Hiddenfjord’s environmental leadership was recognized by the UK Business Brilliance Awards, where they won an award. Gold Award in Environmental and Corporate Sustainability Category. Gregersen also received a nomination for Business Leader of the Year by the Edie Sustainable Development Leaders Award, one of the UK’s most prestigious corporate sustainability awards.
This nomination was based on Hiddenfjord’s work in animal welfare and sustainability over the past 30 years. Examples include their unique stress-free harvesting system and rearing large smolts on land, thus reducing the time salmon spend in the ocean and hence minimizing the risk of sea lice. Working with the Faroese authorities, Hiddenfjord has continuously advocated for strict and sensible veterinary legislation in the Faroe Islands and inspired other agricultural countries to adopt similar legislation.
